About Us
Tim Brennan’s petition asks the UK Government to negotiate a free cultural work permit that gives touring professionals visa free travel throughout the 27 EU states for music touring professionals, bands, musicians, artists, TV and sports celebrities that tour the EU to perform shows and events and to secure a Carnet exception for touring equipment. Very clearly Tim’s petition chimed a chord with the public and the many UK artists and professionals who tour in the cities and nations across Europe, with over 280,000 signatures that continues to rise. On the back of Tim’s petition, the Carry on Touring campaign was established to keep the pressure on Government to go back to the negotiating table.
Carry on Touring is the umbrella campaign which all those who tour – and rely on touring - can support and sit under. It brings together voices from across the touring, cultural and creative industries sectors to secure cross-party support for Tim Brennan’s petition and campaign for a return of free EU movement for all touring artists and professionals. The strength of this campaign is that it is inclusive reaching across the sector, industry and political parties. This public facing campaign brings a spectrum of voices together to demonstrate its diversity and demographic.

Ged Lynch: Freelance professional percussionist for 30+ years. Client list includes Peter Gabriel, Goldfrapp, Birdie, Gary Kemp.
"I'm supporting the 'Carry on Touring' Petition to help give voice, to a woefully under-represented group of professionals. An industry that is worth far more than £5.8Billion to the UK economy. Music, theatre, film and their technical support need help to continue bringing people joy. The eco-system that maintains our industry, for both new and established artists, relies upon the free movement of professionals.
Please lend us a hand, follow, sign up for a newsletter and share our content. The more noise the better, we are all in this together."
Kaptin Barrett
Senior Programmer for Boomtown
DJ - AAA Badboy

Kaptin Barrett has been many things during his 20+ years in the business but is perhaps best known as one of the senior programmers for Boomtown. As well as bringing in more acts from Europe than most UK festivals he is also a touring DJ under the name AAA Badboy.
"It's incredible the response that UK artists receive in Europe, shows across the continent can honestly make or break acts. It's rarely sustainable for a professional act to only tour the UK but more than that if artists are unable to tour it is harder for them to maintain interest from fans and eventually their sales will start to dry up which has a knock-on effect across the industry."
Anna Lucia Sadler
Freelance Camera Operator
Live Camera Vision Director

Anna Lucia Sadler is a freelance camera operator and video director who has worked with artists including Paul Weller, Stereophonics, Andrea Bocelli, David Guetta, Anderson Paak, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Robyn.
"As artists grow, they need contact with a wider market, and access to European audiences is really important. We have so much talent across the board within the UK music industry, that to deprive artists and technicians from easy access to EU countries hinders professional development and employment opportunities. This means our skills may be overlooked when it comes to crewing up for European tours."
"To have come from a year shaped by a global pandemic, to then have the future of touring made uncertain by Brexit is another major blow to the industry and the individuals that make it all happen"
David Knopfler
Musician, Singer, Songwriter
Founder member of Dire Straits

The music industry and touring musicians like myself have been urgently explaining for five years now, to anyone who will listen, why Brexit is hugely damaging to our ability to perform. Freedom of movement and frictionless travel in and out of the EU has been an essential component to keeping our costs do-able.
We need the UK Government to stop wringing their hands like Pontius Pilate and to get serious about owning that they created this problem by leaving the EU without any deal for us and that they need to do a lot more to fix it than falsely blaming the EU.
It’s not only a loss for us but it’s also a loss for the treasury - We pay taxes on these overseas earnings and we won’t we paying them if we’re unable to tour.

“The economic aspect of what's happening right now has already been well asserted, but we shouldn't have to explain or defend why live music is such a fundamental part of our lives & society. Music is the life force. And loud, live music is the indescribable, transcendental, ass-kicking euphoria that makes life worth living. Our policy makers have clearly never experienced it”.
Howard Goodall CBE
Composer of Choral Music, Stage Musicals,
Film & TV Scores

Howard Goodall is an EMMY, BRIT and BAFTA award-winning composer of choral music, stage musicals, film and TV scores. His music is performed all over the world. He is a distinguished music historian, writer and broadcaster. In recent years he has been England’s first ever National Ambassador for Singing, the Classical Brit Composer of the Year and was Classic FM’s Composer-in-Residence for 6 years. In the 2011 New Year Honours he was appointed CBE for services to music education.
"I have been trying to warn our creative sectors for 5 years about the calamity of Brexit, in particular the abandonment of Freedom of Movement and quitting the EEA Customs Union. That calamity is now upon us, meaning thousands of jobs are at risk of disappearing in a once-thriving sector. It is irresponsible of the UK Government to have forged on with a course of action they knew would deal a mortal blow to the Creative Industries, with so little thought or care applied to the potential damage their rushed departure from the Single Market would wreak. If they care one iota for the industries affected and the livelihoods they support, they will rethink and re-negotiate, as a matter of urgency."
Craig Logan
Artist Manager and CEO
of Logan Media Entertainment

“Today, concert touring has become an ever more important part of an artist's work since streaming has virtually replaced traditional album sales. It contributes a £100 billion per year to the UK economy and is responsible for creating over a million jobs. The unnecessary bureaucratic roadblocks currently in place on touring across Europe are wreaking havoc on these figures. The effect is not only being felt on artist income but also on creative opportunities and development of British artists internationally."
Craig’s 35 years in the game has offered him a first-hand perspective from various industry angles. He started out an artist himself in the band Bros, then wrote and produced hits for others before he entered the business world as VP of International at EMI Music. There he played an integral role in expanding the reach of artists in multiple markets and worked closely with Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Robbie Williams, and Garth Brooks amongst many others.
Later as a manager he oversaw worldwide tours and releases for Pink, Tina Turner, Sade and Joe Cocker. Sony Music approached in 2006 and Craig took on running the RCA label group, home to the likes of Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Usher, Dido, Celine Dion, Alecia Keys, The Script and The Hoosiers. During the 5 years which Craig ran the label, RCA sold 50 million albums and won label of the year in 2007.
Craig now runs his own successful management company; Logan Media Entertainment (LME) where he represents a roster of internationally renowned artists.
Peredur ap Gwynedd
Guitarist - Pendulum
Freelance Session Musician

Peredur ap Gwynedd: Guitarist in Pendulum. Also a freelance session musician. Client List: Faithless, Natalie Imbruglia, Tinie Tempah, Kim Wilde, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Anastacia, Mylene Farmer. Music producer for countless TV shows on BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, S4C, RTL (Germany), Channel 7 (Australia).
"Brexit is a disaster for British musicians and crew, but ironically will be a bonanza for musicians/crew with EU passports. Once we start touring again, it will be cheaper for UK artists/managers/labels to hire EU passport holders than those with UK passports. Why pay visa fees and deal with a mountain of red tape, when you can simply hire someone on the continent? It will be the death knell for many British people who work in the creative arts. We need to put pressure on the Government to help us. Please support our cause."
Mark Warburton
Professional Touring Drummer
Online Session Drummer

I have been a professional touring drummer for the last 19 years and have been fortunate to play and record all over the world with some amazing artists.
In todays climate, it is increasingly difficult to secure funding to hire a studio and an engineer to record drums. To solve the problem I became an online session drummer.
Touring has been central to my work as a musician for the last 20 years. Prior to Brexit and Covid, I would normally be playing across Europe every week with Kyla Brox. Possibly up to four different EU countries a week. Without being added to the visa waiver list, I believe UK artists will stop being booked due to the extra expense and complications when compared with European artists.
Tim Heymerdinger
Drummer
The Little Unsaid

Tim Heymerdinger is drummer for London-based four piece The Little Unsaid.
"We are literally the archetypal band in a Transit. Before signing to our label, we’d gotten a foothold in Germany and small breakthroughs elsewhere plus a great reception from new fans on the EU mainland. Then Brexit happened. And here we are in 2021, having to scramble for expensive workarounds for EU touring – with everything from carnets to resistance from naturally wary EU promoters to worry about; sure, those can be made to work – but even as a signed act, with increased expenses and bureaucracy our margins will be slim at best. It also potentially rules out taking essential crew with us – from soundperson to merch."
"We're therefore very happy to be an Ambassador for the Carry On Touring Campaign to join the thousands of creatives who often rely on tour income to survive."
Andy McCluskey
Lead singer and founding member of
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.

British popular culture is adored and revered across the world. All our arts act as cultural ambassadors whilst supporting many thousands of businesses, tens of thousands of individuals, and generating thousands of millions in taxable revenue. Sadly now, access to our nearest market is greatly restricted.
It has been a glaring oversight that the promised Cultural Passport was not negotiated. Without this type of arrangement, it will be hugely more expensive and complicated for UK musical artists to travel and work in Europe. Visas, carnets, and haulage restrictions will hamstring even the most successful acts and make touring on the Continent essentially an impossibility for newer artists who command lower fees.
The damage has been masked by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, as this now comes to and end our industry will be greatly diminished without an agreement being urgently negotiated.
Sophia Rahman
Freelance Pianist

Sophia Rahman made the first UK recording of Florence Price’s piano concerto with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Sophia teaches on the String Masters programme run by the Irish Chamber Orchestra at the University of Limerick’s Irish World Academy of Music and Dance.
"Performing artists and their support crews have been incredibly hard hit by Covid restrictions. Now we are being denied work in the EU through a Brexit 'deal' that utterly failed to acknowledge the needs of our industry. We urgently call on the government to return to the negotiating table and forge a solution to the crippling effects of this 'deal' on our industry before our valuable sector is annihilated."
Thomas Heher
Festival Director
Waves Vienna

Thomas Heher has been working in the cultural sector since 1996. After co-founding the pop culture magazine The Gap in 1996, which is now the oldest print pop culture magazine still being published in Austria, he launched the international music label P.A.M. Records in 1998 and ran it himself as an active musician until the early 2000s.
After co-founding the literary newspaper Volltext in 2002 and the music magazine TBA in 2006, he developed the concept and launched Waves Vienna, now the largest showcase festival and conference in CEE, which he still runs as director.
In 2022, he took over the co-project management of the Austrian Music Export Office and was also entrusted with the co-management of the Vienna Club Commission.
Thomas Heher also works as a consultant in music matters and is a member of various juries and advisory boards in Austria and internationally.
J Bizz
East London Based
MC / Rapper

J Bizz is a 25-year-old MC/Rapper who has been in music since he was 12.
When talking about his passion for music and touring, J Bizz said "Music is important to me because it improves your health and wellbeing. Music stimulates the brain which in turn helps with pain relief, reducing stress and improving memory. Music can also express your emotions without having you show them way to do it."
"Music is powerful in many other ways that could take your feelings away. The important thing that the music takes your feelings when you are sad, nervous, or when tour happy and the music makes you more happy."
The Darius Brubeck Quartet
Jazz Quartet
touring annually in the UK or the US

The Darius Brubeck Quartet has travelled the world and released three critically acclaimed CDs, Cathy’s Summer, Years Ago and their most recent, The Darius Brubeck Quartet: Live in Poland, recorded at the end of their historic 2018 tour and released in December 2019.
Live in Poland was given four stars in the May 2020 issue of Downbeat, five stars in the March issue of Jazzwise and praised in The Financial Times.
We’re used to hopping across the channel several times a year and that’s true for many jazz musicians here. The current situation is harmful on every level. One of my reasons for living in the UK was to be ‘in Europe’ but after Brexit, the next best thing is visa-free travel for artists.
Fish
Singer - Song writer
Marillion & Solo Artist

Fish: Singer - Song writer.
"I’ve had a wonderful journey that would play a huge part in the international success of my former band Marillion and in my own career as a solo artist."
"Since leaving "Marillion" in 1988 I have continued to enjoy success in Europe and touring there has been a constant factor in my career with over 40% of my mail order sales coming from the continent."
"We need a "cultural passport" for both European and UK professional creatives to perform and travel across borders to at least ease some of these problems and allow them to earn a living in their chosen fields. There has to be some serious consideration at respective government levels on both sides to work this out or we are looking at the further demise of the music industry and the loss of a generation of musicians and technicians across the continent of Europe who have had their dreams and aspirations wiped out by needless bureaucracy."
Chris Markland
Tour Manager
Kaiser Chiefs, Rudimental, Tom Odell, Plan B, Billy Ocean, Meatloaf

As a TM of over 30 years I have never seen the industry in such a perilous state. the importance of being able to move freely to perform is now paramount. Acts that are starting to build their following and develop their sound will struggle to find any dates / venues in the UK as many have permanently closed due to Covid 19. In the past these acts were able to tour Europe (where smaller venues are plentiful), but with current Brexit regs this will be impossible. The costs and red tape will be out of reach of acts on this level. The UK 'big hitters' will also struggle. These costs will have to be reflected in the fees the band's charge, making them more expensive for European promoters. This will make UK acts unviable for many European festivals. Without reciprocal FOM across EU and UK live music as we know it will be history and the UK pre-eminence in this field will be a thing of the past.
Curran
Two-Piece Americana Heartland Rock N Roll Band

CURRAN are a two-piece Americana Heartland Rock N Roll band from New Jersey and Scotland. They have spent the last couple years touring the UK and Europe with KIEFER SUTHERLAND, THE CADILAC THREE, WILL HOGE, FRANKIE BALLARD and such....
"Touring is our life. Without it, we have nothing. Over the last few years we have been building a fan base the old-fashioned way...going city to city and leaving our hearts on every stage. Without the continued freedom to do that, not only will we not be able to keep growing our audience, but we won’t be able to make a living selling our records and CD's at shows. It is truly at the heart of what we do and ultimately allows us to keep doing it. Please don't ignore the Touring Visa issue. As we've learned over the last year....a life without live events, just isn't nice."
John Robb
Journalist : musician : TV and radio presenter :
author : DJ : mentor : spoken word

John Robb is the driving force behind the Membranes and has spent 40 years touring the world at grass roots DIY level and knows all about the mountain of problems that Brexit will present bands.
"It's the next generation of musicians and crews and the whole pyramid of people who survive due to this unwanted and unneeded restraint of one of the UK's most loved international trades..."
Ashley Slater
Singer – Freak Power,
Kitten And The Hip, Microgroove

>Ashley Slater - Singer – Freak Power, Kitten And The Hip, Microgroove, He is also a Trombonist – Loose Tubes, Electric Ladyland Big Band, Carla Bley, George Russell, Andy Sheppard - Songwriter, Producer
"Brexit is nothing but bad news for British musicians and crew, and that is something which we have pointed out since the Brexit referendum result. Freak Power is my most active band for touring, and we’re what I’d call a ‘mid level’ band. We will struggle to meet all the visa and carnet requirements once we start touring again. Our merchandising, which really helped to cover some expenses gaps will be pretty much halted. It will be cheaper for me to hire EU passport holders than those with UK passports for crew and sound. It will be the end of many low and mid level bands touring Europe, which I’m absolutely distraught about, to be frank. Touring made up about a third of my annual income, and that is a massive hit for me. We need to continue to put pressure on the Government to help us. Please support our cause."
Steve Harley
Frontman - Cockney Rebel
Ambassador for the Mines Advisory group

Steve Harley: Frontman and Founder Cockney Rebel. Ambassador for the Mines Advisory group.
"It was monumentally remiss of the Government to overlook the need for an EU-wide agreement that would allow artists from the UK to travel to and around Europe in pursuit of their livelihoods. With my rock band, Cockney Rebel, and with my Acoustic Band, plus the necessary four or five crew on the team, we play dozens of concerts and festivals in many different European countries every year."
"This generates a large gross income for my company, which, most importantly, ensures the players and crew all keep their income-stream maximised. Visas could well be expensive and, for some artists/groups, a potential barrier. I will support the Carry On Touring campaign with a passion. Musicians, and all artists, are by definition entertainers, and it’s pretty clear that the European audiences would miss us very badly if we pulled out of our tours,"
Zal Cleminson
Self-Taught Guitarist
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band (SAHB).

When SAHB split up, in 1978, they decided to tour as the Zal Band, n 1979 Cleminson joined Nazareth and recorded two albums with them. A regular guitarist with Elkie Brooks on many of her tours throughout the 1980s. He wrote and played on Brooks' album Minutes as well as one track on No More The Fool. Cleminson has also toured with Midge Ure on his Gift World Tour 1985 and Bonnie Tyler.
During the 1990s Cleminson played with The Party Boys, that, at various times, featured former Marillion vocalist Fish and Nazareth's Dan McCafferty and Billy Rankin as vocalists. This band became a reformed SAHB (Sensational Alex Harvey Band), in 1993, with Zero Zero vocalist Stevie Doherty; it recorded a live album titled Live in Glasgow 93. Zal will be releasing a novel sometime in 2020/2021.
"This problem his arisen as a direct result of Brexit. The campaign needs your support."
Barrie Cadogan
Live / Studio Guitarist - Little Barrie
The The, Primal Scream, Paul Weller

Barrie Cadogan has been releasing records and touring with his band Little Barrie since 2000
"The Brexit deal completely failed to represent the needs of UK touring professionals working in Europe. The additional costs and red tape involved with visas, carnets and extra time needed for border checks will now make touring impossible for many. Pressure needs to be put on the government now to secure the future for our industry in the EU."
"Much of my own work over the last 18 years involved touring. Without performing within in the EU I would not have survived or been able to build the same following and contacts. Whether it’s with my bandmates playing our own shows or working with other artists, the ability to cross borders freely to reach new audiences has been a crucial part of my career as a musician."

Pat Fulgoni
Singer / Producer / Promoter
Camo&Krooked, London Elektricity, Technimatic

Pat Fulgoni could sing a pearl from its oyster" (Billboard). Singer across many genres with artists like Camo&Krooked, London Elektricity, Technimatic, Zion Train, Gary Lucas, Kava Kava to name a few. Pat's track record includes work for good causes including Love Music Hate Racism, organising community music festivals and regional music development initiatives at music conferences incl SXSW (USA) where he organised the only ever "all Yorkshire" showcases at the British Music Embassy (until the funding for it was no longer possible).
"This government needs to get a grip on the crisis facing the creative industries in this country. It makes no economic sense to abandon the music biz like this. To be denied work and touring in the EU after covid is absolutely braindead. And don’t underestimate the detrimental effect the general lack of support for music is having not only on the industry’s but the nation’s health"
Sheila Chandra
World Music Pioneer, Author & Artist Coach

As a teenager she formed the band Monsoon with Steve Coe and bassist Martin Smith. Monsoon created a fusion of Western and Indian pop styles in 1982 f it had a hit single, "Ever So Lonely". Chandra went on to release a number of albums in the 1980s
In the 1990s Chandra decided, having been a studio artist exclusively, to give concerts for the first time, and concurrently released a trilogy of albums on Peter Gabriel's Real World label.
In 2007, she recorded two songs for Simon Emmerson's project The Imagined Village, which set out to reinterpret traditional British songs using a wide range of contemporary British musicians. She also appeared with the Imagined Village on a concert tour of Britain in 2007.
"Freedom of movement is an essential prerequisite for musicians and performers of all kinds to maintain a healthy touring schedule. I welcome and support the campaign to create a free cultural work permit for UK performers which will free everyone in the industry from the current crippling restrictions on EU travel for performers and their professional equipment as a sensible and practical measure which will save livelihoods."

Partner at Cadence Solicitors

Simon is a veteran music lawyer - having worked in the industry over 4 decades. He’s a Partner at Cadence Solicitors, based in Soho, and well known for representing talent across all genres of music. He also manages a couple of artists Gemma Hayes and Tamaraebi.

As a patriotic champion of British music and dedicated political activist (of a Liberal persuasion) he is committed to calling out the difficulties that have been caused by Brexit, not just to our musicians, but to the whole ecosystem that relies on touring the Continent that we live on.
The importance of touring underlies the whole economy of music, the promotion of British Culture, and the export value of intellectual property rights.

"I wholeheartedly pledge my support for the Carry On Touring campaign. For decades the live and entertainment industry has brought in tens of Billions for the treasury and Brexit is nothing short of an absolute disaster for this sector of the industry putting livelihoods of many thousands of people and their families at serious risk. Collectively we must come together and rightfully campaign for the Government renegotiate the “dire” deal that is currently in place. "

"I have been working around Europe for the last 20 years. Sometimes getting on a plane on a Saturday morning, playing rented instruments and getting home on Sunday night, sometimes packing everything in a van and getting on the ferry."
"As a result of Brexit this is going to be much much harder and most of it just will not be viable. It has been a major part of my income and the most enjoyable part of my work as a musician."
Pete Currier
Lighting Designer, Sound Engineer, Rigger,
Stage, Project and Production Manager

Did my first gig aged 12 in 1964, been a lighting designer, sound engineer, rigger, stage project and production manager, even played in bands. Of late I have been working with upcoming bands, but the issues that Brexit have bought up makes it uneconomical for new British bands to do shows in Europe. The costs of carnets alone puts most of them off cutting off a huge market and also the ability to earn enough points to get a visa to tour the USA.
I grew with the touring industry going from Thames vans (Transits hadn’t been invented then) to Antanov heavy lift aircraft. Small local bands to the likes of Michael Jackson, U2 and Prince. The UK touring personnel have long been the best in the world, but now tours cannot justify taking UK crew on world tours. It’s a very sad state of affairs.
Tony Gregory
Freelance Camera Director

Tony Gregory is a freelance director, who over many years has worked in most EU countries on concert broadcasts and recordings, festival coverage, and touring documentaries with 1000s of performers: rock, pop, classical, dance, musicals. He has also directed and consulted on many TV and entertainment formats across Europe.
"The mission of this campaign is vital. Music knows no borders. No one place has a monopoly on talent and skills. Across the whole of the EU and the UK there are some phenomenal production and creative talent, we are all better off for being able to create the best possible experiences for audiences, by having access to all of that talent. Flexible working and collaboration in the cultural industries across the UK and EU is of existential importance."
Sheema Mukherjee
Sitar Player and Composer
The Imagined Village project

Sheema has collaborated with internationally renowned artists such as Sir John Tavenor, Martin Carthy, Bobby Mcferrin, Boris Grebenshikov, Natacha Atlas, Noel Gallagher & Cornershop, Mercan Dede, the Bulgarian Folk singer Yanka Rupkina. Courtney Pine and Sheema has been featured on his albums Back In The Day and Devotion and was a guest artist on the 'On Track' tour - a project for the UK Commonwealth Games.
"For the last 25 years the majority of my income has been from touring in Europe. As a soloist and part of Transglobal Underground, we have a large EU fan base."
"Our music is cross cultural and has been partly inspired by Europe trad beats and folk etc. Since the vote and total confusion thereafter, the EU promoters were nervous and my booked shows were put on hold. Now it seems, with the extra bureaucracy and costs involved, many British creatives and crew like myself will simply not be able to tour the EU. With the Carry on Touring campaign hopefully we can put continued pressure on the Govt. It is vital on so many levels to have the freedom to perform and tour in the EU"
